Voice & Public Speaking Coaching in Asheville, NC & Online
Work with a Professional Voice Coach for Speaking, Presenting & Being Heard!
What You'll Learn from a Voice Coach for Professional & Public Speaking
Your speaking voice is an instrument, and like any instrument, it can be trained. Some students seek out coaching for their speaking voice because they want more projection, clarity, or vocal stamina. Others want to feel calmer and more confident presenting, teaching, leading meetings, recording, or speaking in front of any audience — whether that's a boardroom, a classroom, or a wedding toast.
During coaching sessions, you may work on breath support, vocal placement, resonance, articulation, pacing, and tone variety. You may also explore reducing vocal strain and fatigue, managing speaking nerves, using a microphone, warming up your voice, and developing a speaking presence that feels genuinely like you. The goal is a voice that carries, communicates, and holds up to the demands you place on it.
You may learn how to:
Support your speaking voice with breath instead of throat tension
Project clearly without shouting or straining
Speak with more resonance, warmth, and vocal presence
Reduce vocal fatigue from teaching, presenting, or long calls
Manage nerves and stay grounded while speaking
Vary your pacing, tone, and emphasis to keep listeners engaged
Warm up and care for your voice before heavy speaking days
Use a microphone with confidence
Prepare for presentations, interviews, recordings, or events
Sound like yourself — only clearer, steadier, and easier to hear
Practice Being Heard, Not Just Speaking
Confidence in front of an audience is built the same way vocal technique is: through practice in a supportive setting. Coaching sessions give you a place to rehearse the real experience of speaking — standing up, breathing, making eye contact, handling the moment your nerves spike — with someone offering honest, encouraging feedback.
You can use your sessions to prepare for something specific, like a presentation, wedding speech, interview, sermon, or podcast launch, or to build general comfort with being heard. Over time, that practice changes your relationship with speaking itself: from something you brace for into something you can actually enjoy.
A Holistic Approach to Voice & Presence
Your voice is connected to your body, breath, emotions, confidence, and nervous system — and nowhere is that more obvious than public speaking. A shaky voice is rarely a technique problem alone. That is why our voice coaching is both practical and holistic, working on vocal mechanics while making room for the nerves, habits, and self-consciousness underneath.
For some students, the work is mostly technical: projection, clarity, stamina. For others, it is about feeling safe being seen and heard, or unlearning the habit of shrinking their voice. Most people find the work touches both — and that the two kinds of growth reinforce each other.
Your Speaking Voice Deserves Real Vocal Training
Most public speaking advice focuses on what you say — slides, structure, storytelling. A vocal coach for speaking works on the layer underneath: how your voice actually produces sound. Breath, resonance, articulation, and vocal placement determine whether you sound strained or steady, thin or grounded, hard to hear or effortless to listen to.
These are the same fundamentals professional singers train, applied to speech. When your voice is well supported, everything else about speaking gets easier: you project without pushing, your tone stays warm under pressure, and your voice lasts through a full day of teaching, meetings, or presentations.

Who We Work Best With
Adults
Online voice lessons can support adults who are beginning, returning to music, pursuing professional goals, or simply looking for a meaningful creative practice. Lessons are adapted to your experience, interests, schedule, and inspiration for wanting to sing.
Kids & Teens
Young singers can build healthy habits, musical confidence, and a stronger understanding of their voices in age-appropriate sessions. Lessons may include favorite songs, vocal exercises, performance preparation, creativity, and guidance for practicing without strain. AND some songwriting guidance if that is a focus.
Beginners
You do not need previous training, music-reading skills, a large vocal range, or confidence performing in front of others. Beginners receive clear, encouraging guidance that helps them understand the basics while making room for curiosity and gradual growth. And the opportunity to sing on stage if that is a desire.
Groups & Bands
Groups and bands can work on blend, harmony, arrangement, communication, performance, and the vocal demands of shared music-making. Coaching can be tailored to a specific song, upcoming performance, rehearsal challenge, or broader group goal.
Professionals
Singers, musicians, actors, teachers, speakers, and other professional voice users can receive targeted support for demanding schedules and specific performance needs. Lessons may focus on stamina, consistency, recovery, preparation, expression, healthy voice practices, somatic breath and awareness or sustainable vocal use.
Musical Theater
Prepare songs and audition material with attention to vocal technique, storytelling, character, phrasing, and performance choices. Coaching can support both virtual and in-person auditions, rehearsals, callbacks, and role preparation. Our musical theatre coach can help you with it all!

Frequently Asked Questions About Our Voice & Public Speaking Coaching
-
Coaching for your speaking voice helps you develop the physical and expressive sides of your voice. On the physical side, that includes breath support, projection, resonance, articulation, vocal placement, and habits that cause strain or fatigue. On the expressive side, it includes pacing, emphasis, tone variety, presence, and connection with your listeners.
Sessions are shaped around your goals. A teacher losing their voice by Friday needs different work than an executive preparing a keynote or a podcaster who dislikes how they sound on recordings. Your coach will listen to your voice, identify what is helping and what is getting in the way, and build from there.
-
Yes. Speaking nerves usually show up in the voice first — a tight throat, shallow breath, a shaky or rushed delivery. Voice coaching addresses those symptoms directly, because breath and vocal support are also nervous system tools. Learning to breathe low and speak with support gives you something concrete to return to when nerves rise.
Just as importantly, coaching gives you a safe place to practice being heard. Rehearsing your material out loud, in front of a supportive listener, gradually retrains the anxiety response. True Voice also offers dedicated performance anxiety coaching for students who want to make that work the primary focus.
-
Not at all. Many True Voice students come exclusively for their speaking voice and have no interest in singing. The techniques that develop a strong singing voice — breath support, resonance, freedom from tension — apply directly to speech, which is why vocal coaches are often the best-trained people to work with speakers.
That said, some students discover along the way that a little vocal play, humming, or simple singing exercises helps their speaking voice develop faster. Your vocal coach will meet you where you are and keep the work focused on your goals, whether that ever includes singing a note or not.
-
Yes. Coaching for your speaking voice translates very well to Zoom, and True Voice offers coaching online, in person at our Asheville, NC studio, or as a hybrid of both. Online sessions can include breath and voice training, presentation rehearsal, recorded playback, and feedback on how you sound through a microphone and camera.
For many speakers, online coaching has a built-in advantage: much of modern speaking happens on video calls, webinars, and recordings anyway. Practicing in that exact medium — how you sit, breathe, project, and connect through a screen — makes the coaching immediately applicable to your daily communication.
-
Anyone who uses their voice to lead, teach, present, or connect. Our students include executives, managers, teachers and professors, lawyers, clergy, therapists, salespeople, entrepreneurs, podcasters, content creators, actors, and people preparing for a single high-stakes moment like a wedding toast, TEDx talk, or job interview.
Heavy voice users — people who talk for hours every day — often benefit most, because they need both presence and vocal durability. If your voice feels tired, strained, quiet, shaky, or simply not like you at your best, coaching can help regardless of your profession or experience level.
-
Public speaking classes usually focus on content and delivery structure — organizing a talk, using slides, managing time. Voice coaching for speakers goes deeper into the instrument itself: how you breathe, produce sound, project, and carry emotion in your voice. The two complement each other, but they develop different skills.
Coaching is also private and personalized. Instead of general tips delivered to a group, you get individual feedback on your specific voice, habits, goals, and material, at your own pace. For many students, that one-on-one attention is what finally moves them past plateaus that classes and books could not.
